ESIP Summer Meeting
July 19 – 22, 2016
Durham Convention Center
301 West Morgan Street
Durham, NC 27701
Join Clean Power Research at the ESIP Summer Meeting to learn more about Frontiers in Earth Sciences Big Data. This event will help promote a dialogue about the massive amounts of data generated by the Earth sciences, the valuable patterns and information that lie within this data, and the art and practice of visualizing and communicating Earth science data.
Session: The Users’ Perspective: How are Energy Utilities and Developers Using Earth Observation Data to Address Climate Resilience and Support Renewable Energy?
Date: July 20, 2016
Time: 2:00-3:30
Location: Junior Ballroom A
Presentation: Challenges and Opportunities in the Growing Solar Energy Industry
Speaker: Alemu Tadesse, Clean Power Research
Energy utilities and power project developers are increasingly recognizing the climate-sensitivity of their day-to-day operations and planning on the 20-30 year timescale. Solar and wind power project developers require resource data and forecasts for project design, operations and financing. Increasingly sophisticated software and models from value-added providers and in-house meteorology groups at some utilities rely on Earth observations from NASA, NOAA, and other sources to support their decisions.
In this session, you’ll hear from energy sector end-users on their current and emerging decision-support needs focused on a climate resilient infrastructure and renewable energy development. A summary of a recent NASA-sponsored workshop on this topic will provide context for the panel discussion.
