This Technical Product Manager position will own feature discovery, development and roadmap of software products currently used by utilities to solve some of the most complex grid modernization challenges. This set of solutions includes products that are used by utility engineers, planners and grid operators to model distributed energy resources (DERs) and give greater visibility into the DERs’ impact within existing and emerging business processes.

The person in this role will act as an individual contributor and work closely with customers to gain a deep understanding of their pain points, then develop solutions that can be implemented by the software engineering team.  Key customer interactions will involve gathering information on current and future customer needs, product demonstration, consultation and support.

This position will often interact with other internal Clean Power Research teams, including software engineering, data science, sales and business development, marketing, design and other product managers.  This role requires the ability to effectively work with these teams to exceed revenue and profitability goals.

  • Discover customer needs and write user stories and business requirements that lead to feature specifications to meet those needs
  • Serve as an internal and external technical champion, combining knowledge of software development, passion about subject matter and strong math/statistics background
  • Generate compelling product content that enables sales and marketing engagement with target accounts
  • Work effectively across product groups, with both dedicated and virtual engineering teams to deliver on feature launches that exceed customer expectations
  • Analyze and validate product capability and data accuracy, both for customer product adoption, engagement and marketing business needs
  • Coordinate and prioritize data science research, design, and software engineering efforts
  • Understand the evolving business and competitive landscape and communicate the near- and long-term product roadmap
  • Articulate the technical differentiation and commercial value of the product through compelling software demos
  • Represent the company at technical conferences through publications and presentations
  • Provide technical support for marketing, sales and business development


  • Minimum of BS degree required, preferably in engineering, math or physics
  • 2+ or more years of product management, including experience with SaaS
  • Knowledge of data science techniques and/or system-based modelling, statistical analysis, and data visualization
  • Demonstrates basic understanding of applied systems modeling and/or machine learning best practices, including problem definition, data preparation, algorithm selection, and measuring performance
  • Experience working with utilities, the energy industry and a passion for cleantech
  • Plusses that may differentiate the best candidates:
    • Basic understanding of applied machine learning and energy systems modeling
    • Experience with scientific programming, in languages such as R or Python
    • Experience with ML toolkits, such as TensorFlow or the Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit (formerly CNTK)
    • Experience with business critical processes at electric utilities
