Clean Power Research seeks a highly motivated, self-driven DER Strategist to explore and develop new opportunities for the company with a particular focus on partnering with our utility customers as a trusted advisor for DER program strategy and implementation. This individual contributor role is ideal for a motivated, high-performing person.

The DER Strategist will bring industry domain experience to the customer, specifically in the areas of DER program business case development, strategic roadmap creation, program management and measurement, best practices, and requirements gathering. The DER Strategist will be capable of delivering strategic discussions and presentations to the utility C-suite, while also having a depth of knowledge on the core scenarios and pain points that the utility analyst or manager experiences in their day-to-day job.

Travel requirement: 25%. This is a primarily in-office position in our Kirkland office with some flexibility for remote work each workweek.


  • Be a subject matter expert (SME) on utility DER, Integrated Resource Planning , electrification and/or energy efficiency program strategies, goals, and best practices
  • Design and deliver a DER Strategy Consulting offering that will support the role of our SaaS products in the three D’s of energy transformation – Decarbonization, Digitization, and Decentralization
  • Develop senior level trusted advisor relationships with clients and prospects
  • Facilitate client workshops to design forward-looking DER program strategies and implementation roadmaps
  • Assist utilities in developing compelling business cases to support DER program investments – targeting utility senior managers/directors all the way up to the C-suite
  • Collaborate with sales and business development to develop project approaches and proposals
  • Develop and deliver high quality technical and business process content to maintain CPR thought leadership position in areas such as DER program management, DER impacts on the Grid, DER process improvements and customer engagement
  • Be a subject matter expert (SME) on utility DER program strategies, goals, and best practices
  • Represent CPR as a thought leader at industry conferences, regulatory proceedings, and other related events and forums
  • Achieve a high level of product proficiency and related best practices in order to serve in a customer delivery capacity for certain projects
  • Work with software engineering and product management to capture emerging customer scenarios


  • Minimum of BA/BS degree; MBA or advanced degree in closely related field preferred
  • 3-5 years in strategic consulting or related role
  • Utility industry experience and in particular DER program knowledge, breadth, and depth
  • Business process and requirements gathering expertise
  • Familiarity with utility business financials and regulatory processes
  • Superior organizational skills; ability to track and juggle many tasks
  • Project management experience
  • Passion for energy and renewables essential
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Strong client facing skills – Confident presenting in front of internal and external groups, including executive audiences
  • Comfortable developing new relationships in the market at conferences and direct meetings
