Clean Power Research is seeking an experienced business professional who, as a member of the Management Team, leads the financial functions of the company and provides guidance and support, as needed, with administrative functions.

This is a primarily in-office position in our Kirkland office with some flexibility for remote work each workweek. The primary duties of this hands-on role are described below.


Financial Management functions such as:

  • Manage all banking and insurance relationships negotiating favorable rates while maintaining positive working relationships with service providers
  • Place excess funds with institutions to maximize interest income and minimize transaction risk and institutional failure risk
  • Prepare bi-weekly financial information for the Executive Team meetings explaining results of operations and progress against budgets
  • Maintain product line P&L statements showing financial results by product
  • Develop an expense budgeting system to include in the Executive Team meetings
  • Verify the maintenance of proper internal controls to safeguard assets, protect confidential information, and maintain proper segregation of duties
  • Act as company liaison to any auditors and to outside accountants providing them with needed information. This includes information for DOE auditors, R&D tax credit, and tax return support
  • Manage the capitalization table activity through the Carta software platform
  • Set up and maintain necessary books of record and prepare all financial statements
  • Enumerate, understand and manage all tax exposures of the company
  • Set up and maintain the sales tax and any VAT tax exposures utilizing Avalara’s web service
  • Communicate with the company’s insurance broker for general business insurance needs and annual insurance renewal form completion
  • Manage insurance certificates

Various Accounting functions:

  • Deposit checks in a timely manner
  • Plan cash flows and manage investment oversight
  • Verify Balance Sheet and Income Statement amounts are supported by transaction related documents
  • Prepare payroll each pay period and perform payroll related functions, including:
  • Setting up new employees in the system
  • Recording any address, withholding, or payroll deduction changes in the system
  • Verify correctness of medical, dental and optional life insurance premium deductions
  • Verify correctness of HSA and 401(k) withholdings and associated employer contributions
  • Manage the use of company credit cards
  • Act as financial manager of all sales and reporting involving US Dept. of Energy projects and other non-DOE government funded projects involving the invoicing of labor costs
  • Review contracts as needed for financial, insurance and reporting impacts
  • Minimize foreign exchange risk

Human Resource and other administrative functions, such as:

  • Complete periodic employee performance evaluations of the Assistant Controller and provide support for that position’s career development
  • Review the work of the Assistant Controller, including the review of:
    • Sales invoices for appearance and sales tax inclusion
    • Twice monthly bank reconciliations
    • Electronic bank transfer information
    • Monthly spread of SaaS subscription revenue and the annual adjustment to Deferred Revenue
    • Monthly activity of company credit cards verifying support is received and coding is correct
    • Weekly Sales Report
  • Verify that appropriate employee documents are maintained for tax and regulatory purposes involving financial transactions with the company
  • Verify that 401(k) plan investments are appropriately managed and employees are informed of investment alternatives
  • Supervise and mentor Assistant Controller



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting required, CPA strongly preferred
  • 10+ years of professional accounting experience required with at least 3 of those years in the position of Controller
  • Experience with handling the financial functions of international operations within a company
  • Experience with QuickBooks financial software (on-premise or online) required
  • Supervisory experience of staff required
  • Experience with a SaaS company, preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong technical and financial accounting knowledge
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task, use good time management skills, and meet deadlines
  • High level of attention-to-detail
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills, particularly in Excel, including a good working knowledge of pivot tables, charts, and sumifs statements
